Ever since I got some words stuck in my head and painted the idea of an image to go alongside it, all I’ve wanted was to make a book that made members of families with disabilities or complicating factors in them feel understood and seen.
I’ve been trying to find a publisher, but I’ve decided to do it myself, so I get full control and can create something incredibly beautiful to look at but also that creates a shared pride and language within a family that includes the ups as well as the downs.
No fake and patronising live laugh love, but also no martyrdom, blame or shame.
I’ve been holding back because I was told publishers would want input into images and layouts, but now I’m just going for it.
I really hope some of you will be interested in getting a copy and maybe even getting an extra one for a friend who you think might need to know there’s a community who ‘gets it’.
